The name says it all – today is your opportunity to tell a fairy tale. Use one that has been recorded in a book, or make up your own.
Many Children’s stories are lumped into the category “Fairy Tales” without a thought to their proper classification. You may have grown up thinking one of your favorites was a fairy tale, and that’s ok. This is likely because of books published with MANY WORKS in them – a “Collection of Fairy Tales” for example made its way onto your bookshelf. These are WONDERFUL books and make great gifts!
Some of the most well-known and Cherished fairy tales include:
- Cinderella
- The Three Little Pigs
- Puss in Boots
- Beauty and the Beast
- Goldilocks and the Three Bears
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
- Little Red Riding Hood
- Sleeping Beauty
- Jack and the Beanstalk
- Rapunzel
- Hansel and Gretel
- Rumpelstiltskin
There are 6 types of TRADITIONAL LITERATURE: Folktales, Fairy Tales, Fables, Myths, Legends, and Tall Tales
It can be confusing because Fairy Tales, Fables, Myths, Legends, and Tall Tales are all FOLKTALES. Folktale is the big category and everything else falls under it as a sub-category.
That’s because all the other stories can be told as Folktales, as stories passed down over time. Many Folktales do not have a known author.
How to Celebrate Tell a Fairy Tale Day
Regardless of the actual classification of your favorite “fairy tale” – the important thing about celebrating Tell a Fairy Tale Day is sharing stories!
- Storybook Dress-Up: Encourage kids to dress up as their favorite fairy tale characters. Whether it’s donning a crown as a princess or crafting a makeshift knight’s armor, let their imaginations run wild.
- Create a Fairy Tale: Invite kids to create their own fairy tale. Provide prompts or let them invent characters, settings, and magical elements, fostering creativity and storytelling skills.
- Story Circle Time: Arrange a story circle where each child contributes a sentence or two to create a collaborative fairy tale. This activity encourages teamwork and sparks collective creativity.
- Illustrate Fairy Tales: Engage kids in illustrating their favorite fairy tales. Provide art supplies and let them bring characters and scenes to life through their unique artistic interpretations.
- Create a Fairy Tale Cookbook: Connect literature with culinary creativity by crafting a fairy tale cookbook. Kids can invent recipes inspired by their favorite characters or settings.
- Fairy Tale Movie Marathon: Host a fairy tale movie marathon featuring animated or live-action adaptations. Afterward, discuss the similarities and differences between the movies and the original tales.
- Fairy Tale Book Exchange: Organize a fairy tale book exchange where kids can trade or lend their favorite fairy tale books with one another, fostering a love for reading and sharing.
- Magical Tea Party: Host a magical tea party inspired by fairy tales. Create themed snacks, dress up in enchanting attire, and enjoy a whimsical tea time filled with storytelling and imagination.
- Fairy Tale Puppet Show: Set up a puppet theater and let kids bring fairy tales to life through puppet shows. This hands-on activity enhances storytelling skills and provides a fun outlet for expression.
