When Florence went into nursing, it was considered “dirty work.” Respectable women did not become nurses. Another key point is that medicine wasn’t practiced the way it is now.
Florence is famous for inspiring the simple act of handwashing! In her book Notes on Nursing written in 1860, Florence tells nurses they should wash their hands as often as possible, and their faces too!
At the time they believed bad smells caused infection! Yet it was really the germs on the hands and faces of medical professionals and volunteers.
The handwashing and other hygiene principles Florence and her team implemented in British army hospitals during the Crimean War were responsible for marked improvements in recovery. Believe it or not, it wasn’t until the 1980s that hand hygiene was recognized globally as a critical component in preventing infection.
