You may be familiar with Cellophane Tape’s more common name “Scotch Tape”. In fact, when it was invented, Cellophane tape was called Scotch Cellulose Tape then  Scotch Transparent Tape. This wonderful tape was invented by an employee of the 3M company.  While Richard Drew was delivering sandpaper to an auto body paint shop, he noticed they had a problem. When employees pulled the tape off, the paint peeled.

Drew invented a masking tape that could be used that would not peel the paint. After cellophane was invented, he wanted to create a tape made of cellophane. This tape would seal packaging and blend in without being visible.

The tape got the name ‘Scotch’ when a body-shop painter, while testing the tape, yelled in frustration “Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!”

In the 1920s, the term “Scotch” was a slang term that meant something or someone that was cheap or stingy. Based on the feedback,  the inventor  Richard Drew applied more adhesive to the tape. The term stuck and Scotch Tape was born…

We celebrate Scotch Tape Day on January 31

Cellophane Tape Day is May 27th in honor of this clear household stationery staple receiving its patent.

Richard Drew was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for the invention of Scotch Tape! Even though other manufacturers make Cellophane tape, many people refer to any clear tape as “Scotch Tape”.
