The American Tortoise Rescue started World Turtle Day in 2000 to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.
You may be wondering what the difference between a Turtle and A Tortoise is. Well, All Tortoises are turtles, but not all Turtles are Tortoises. It’s a bit like Squares and Rectangles in the shape world. A Tortoise is a land turtle. They are omnivores and their back feet are not webbed. However, not all land turtles are tortoises; the box turtles and wood turtles are land turtles as an example.
Some Turtle Tips
World Turtle Day Video from the Organizers
Don’t buy a turtle – seek adoption instead
Remember to wash your hands after handling your turtle
Please don’t take turtles or tortoises from the wild.
If you do help a tortoise cross the road – always send it in the direction it was going. It’s on a mission! IF you turn it around the other way, the tortoise will just go back 🙂
Report cruelty or illegal sales of turtles and tortoises to your local animal control shelter.
Report the use of tiny turtles as prizes at carnivals and other events. It’s illegal. Report the sale of any turtle or tortoise of any kind less than four inches. It is illegal to buy and sell them throughout the U.S.
