What’s a Prospector, Anyway?
A prospector, or gold prospector, is a hearty soul who heads out to them hills and creeks in search of that glimmering gold. During the Gold Rushes of the 19th century, folks from all walks of life threw caution to the wind, grabbed a pickaxe, and headed west in hopes of striking it rich.
Common Prospector Lingo
- Eureka! – A classic exclamation meaning “I found it!” when a prospector struck gold.
- Pay Dirt – Soil or gravel that contains valuable minerals, particularly gold.
- Claim Jumpin’ – When someone tries to snatch another prospector’s legally staked claim.
- Nugget – A small, solid piece of gold found in the earth.
- Panning for Gold – The act of swirling water and gravel in a pan to separate gold from other materials.
Times in History When Mining Was Popular
- California Gold Rush (1848-1855): The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill sparked a rush of prospectors to California in search of fortune.
- Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899): Prospectors stampeded to the Yukon in Canada after gold was found in Bonanza Creek.
- Victorian Gold Rush (1851-1860): Australia experienced a gold rush, drawing fortune-seekers from around the globe.
