The Statue of Liberty – A Beacon of Freedom

On October 28th, we celebrate a symbol of hope and liberty that has welcomed countless immigrants to American shores—the Statue of Liberty. This monumental icon stands as a testament to freedom and a beacon of hope for people around the world. In this blog post, we’ll embark on a historical journey to uncover the Statue of Liberty’s significance, share engaging activities for kids, and mention related holidays that honor American symbols.

The History and Symbolism of the Statue of Liberty

Lady Liberty: A Gift from France

The Statue of Liberty, also known as “Lady Liberty,” was a gift from the people of France to the United States in 1886. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the statue’s copper exterior hides a framework designed by Gustave Eiffel, the same engineer behind the Eiffel Tower.

Symbolism of the Statue of Liberty

Liberty: The Statue symbolizes freedom and liberty, which is why it’s often called “Lady Liberty.” Her torch represents enlightenment and the path to liberty.

Welcoming Immigrants: For many, the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hope and opportunity. It greeted millions of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, signifying the promise of a new life in America.

Unity: The statue’s tablet bears the date of the American Declaration of Independence, signifying the shared values of democracy and independence.
