Reel Film day celebrates movies that were shot on film. It is celebrated March 5th due to the date 3/5, as a nod to 35 mm film.
Check with your local theater as they may be hosting a special screening of a movie that was filmed this way!
Thomas Edison is given credit for inventing the camera and projector to shoot films on. In reality, it was one of his employees William Kennedy Laurie Dickson who invented the Kinetoscope in 1893.
After many years of research, it seems that the idea belonged to Edison, but it was Dickson who performed the majority of the experiments.
Eventually, the Kinetoscope began using 35mm film.
In 1895 the Lumiere brothers projected moving pictures to a paying audience…and the rest you can say is history!
Digital technology has greatly impacted film production over the past 20 years. Most mainstream productions are now created in digital formats with special effects and editing all done by computer.
You can celebrate Reel Film Day by watching one of these movies filmed with 35mm film:
- Wonder Woman (2017)
- Interstellar (2014)
- La La Land (2016)
- Cabaret (1972)
- The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
- Saving Private Ryan (1998)
