The lunchtime staple of school children everywhere is the peanut butter & jelly sandwich. It will be eaten by many over 2,000 times before high school graduation.

April 2 presents us the opportunity to celebrate this iconic duo, It’s National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day. This delightful occasion celebrates not only the beloved flavors of peanut butter and jelly but also the rich history behind this iconic culinary combination.

Join us as we delve into the origins of peanut butter and jelly and explore fun ways for kids to celebrate this delicious holiday.

A Brief History of Peanut Butter

Believe it or not, peanut butter traces its roots back to ancient civilizations. Early Mesoamerican cultures were known to grind roasted peanuts into a paste, creating a precursor to the creamy spread we know today. However, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that peanut butter as we recognize it emerged in the United States. In 1884, Marcellus Gilmore Edson, a Canadian chemist, patented a process for producing peanut paste, paving the way for commercial peanut butter production.

The Rise of Jelly

While peanut butter was making its debut on the culinary scene, jelly was already a well-established favorite. Ancient Egyptians were known to preserve fruit in honey, creating an early form of jelly. Over time, this practice evolved, and by the 17th century, European settlers in America were making fruit preserves using sugar and fruit juice. With the invention of commercial canning in the 19th century, jelly became readily available to the masses, solidifying its status as a beloved condiment.

The Perfect Pairing

The marriage of peanut butter and jelly is a match made in culinary heaven. While the exact origins of this classic combination are unclear, it gained popularity in the early 20th century, thanks in part to the introduction of sliced bread and the convenience it offered for making sandwiches. The affordability and accessibility of peanut butter and jelly also played a role in its widespread adoption as a lunchtime favorite for children and adults alike.

Mrs. Crabtree’s Favorite Peanut Butter and Jelly Activity

My favorite activity to celebrate this holiday is to have the children write out instructions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I do not give any special instructions. I simply tell them to pretend an alien species has arrived on earth and they need to know how to make this sandwich. Then I proceed to follow their instructions EXACTLY. Watch my video to see the end result:

If you would like to use this activity in your home or classroom, it works at any age. I found it was best if you have several entries so you can have unsuccessful sandwiches, before your successful one. Invite over cousins, friends, or other homeschooling families. I always did the presentation right before lunch and handed my kids their sandwich – in all it’s glory!

NOTE: If there are potential allergy issues making a video and showing it is a great option.

Following instructions is a skill learners need, but so is GIVING instructions. One of my former students recently mentioned she was complimented on how well she wrote instructions. She told her co-workers it was because of MY peanut butter and jelly activity from 4th grade!

To add that extra touch to the activity I have created free PB&J-themed papers you can use.
