The original paper clip may very well have been just ribbon through the top of the paper. When the straight pin was invented, that too was used to hold papers together, even though that was not the pin’s intended use.
The first paper clip in the office supply category was designed to hold a ticket to fabric it was invented by Samuel B. Fay in 1867.
Johan Vaaler, a Norwegian inventor invented the paper clip in 1899. He received a patent for his design from Germany in 1899, as Norway had no patent laws at that time. His clip was designed to hold paper.
In 1899 the Gem Manufacturing company in England designed the double oval-shaped, standard paper clip we still use today. This paper clip was never patented.
You can celebrate NATIONAL PAPERCLIP DAY by:
- Make Paper Clip Book Marks
- If your children are old enough – Watch the Documentary PAPER CLIPS It’s about a middle school in Tennessee that collects 6 million paperclips as a project to represent the lives lost in the Holocaust. They chose paper clips because, during World War II, Norwegians wore paper clips as a form of protest.
