In our homeschool, I used the mindset technique that everything was learning. This went hand in hand with the idea that EVERY DAY was a school day. For us, this meant weekends and those days society called holidays too. I chose to implement this overarching mindset to avoid “Is today school? Do we have to do school today?” and other related questions or statements.
If everything is learning, and every day is a school day – then this will never be an issue. School is making pancakes. Wearing pajamas is school. School is Disneyland. Christmas is school. School is binge-watching movies, or a day-long read-a-thon. Shopping for and wrapping birthday or Christmas gifts is school. School is going to a friend’s house to “play”. Everything is school.
This system served us for YEARS without a hiccup. Yet, one day I got a polite request for a day off – a REAL DAY OFF, like their cousins. Where they could do whatever they wanted ALL DAY. This was a really reasonable request because quite honestly, it still fits with my mindset that EVERYTHING was learning. The day we chose happened to be LEAP YEAR DAY. But this day only occurs as you know, once every 4 years.
I would like to recommend, if you too adopt the mindset that school is a 24/7, 365-day-a-year situation in your home, use GOOF OFF DAY as the day your children get to – well, GOOF OFF! One day off out of even a regular 180-day year isn’t bad!
