National Bird Day is one of a few fun-filled holidays with a bird theme.

Born Free USA along with the Avian Welfare Coalition started National Bird Day in 2002. There are approximately 10,000 species of birds and National Bird day is a great day to understand and recognize their diversity.

It is also a good day to spread awareness of the exotic bird trade (thousands of parrots are taken from the wild to be sold as pets) and proper care of exotic birds that are already in captivity.

Whether you appreciate simple backyard birds or have birds for pets, today is a day to spread awareness about things we can do to care for our feathered friends.

You can Celebrate Bird Day by:

• Bird watching
• Set up feeders, a birdbath, and shelter for them in your yard.
• You can download the free app from the Audubon society to help with identification.
• Feed the birds – set up a routine so you can continue to put out food for them.
• Observe what they like
• Study different bird species
• Draw or color birds
• Visit or Donate to a bird sanctuary
• Support conservation organizations – visit the Avian Welfare Coalition website for lots of information!
