Sowing Seeds of Legends
On March 11th, we celebrate the legacy of a folk hero who became synonymous with apple orchards, kind deeds, and a unique way of life – Johnny Appleseed. This iconic figure, also known as John Chapman, left an indelible mark on American folklore and the landscape of orchards across the nation.
In this blog post, let’s delve into the legends associated with Johnny Appleseed, explore his remarkable story, and share delightful ways kids can celebrate this legendary figure.
The Legend of Johnny Appleseed:
Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman in 1774, was a real-life nurseryman and missionary known for spreading the love of apples across the American frontier. The legends surrounding Johnny Appleseed depict him as a gentle soul who wandered barefoot, wearing a pot on his head as a hat, and carrying a sack of apple seeds. His mission was to plant apple orchards throughout the Midwest and share the bounty of apples with pioneers and Native American communities.
While the real Johnny Appleseed did plant apple nurseries, the folklore has embellished his character into a symbol of generosity, kindness, and harmony with nature. Legends tell tales of him traveling through the wilderness, leaving apple trees in his wake, and preaching messages of goodwill and conservation.
John Chapman was far from an impoverished nomad randomly wandering the United States. He planted his Apple Trees to form nurseries as a business. By the time he died, he owned 1,200 acres of land. Johnny Appleseed was intentional with his apples, helping people and using the land wisely.
Johnny Appleseed planted THOUSANDS of Apple Trees, and unfortunately, there is only ONE certified Johnny Appleseed Tree that remains is in a small town in Ohio. Many of the trees that Johnny planted died from age or the weather. Others were chopped down during Prohibition because the apples were used to make alcohol.
