Blooms of Creativity: Celebrating Floral Design Day

Floriography is the language of flowers. The flowers themselves do not talk, but how they are arranged, and their colors send messages. In fact, In Victorian Times, flower arrangements could be sent as coded messages to express feelings that were not acceptable to express in person.

One of the most familiar books about Floriography is called THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS and it is still published today.

This and similar publications explain for example that red roses signify deep love, whereas pink roses can be used where there is just a small affection. Yellow roses are said to stand for friendship.

Floral Design Day honors Carl Rittner, the founder of Rittner School of Floral Design in Boston. This delightful occasion invites us to explore the artistry of arranging flowers, expressing creativity through blooms, and embracing the joy that a well-crafted bouquet can bring.

In this blog post, we’ll embark on a journey into the world of floral design, share the significance of the day, and present enchanting ways for kids to celebrate Floral Design Day.

Floral Design

Floral design is the art and skill of creating arrangements with flowers and other plant materials. From classic bouquets to elaborate centerpieces, floral design allows individuals to express emotions, celebrate occasions, and bring a touch of nature’s beauty indoors.

Floral Design Day encourages everyone to appreciate the work of floral designers and try their hand at creating their own beautiful arrangements. Whether it’s a simple bunch of wildflowers or an intricately crafted centerpiece, the possibilities are as diverse as the flowers themselves.

Ways Kids Can Celebrate Floral Design Day

  1. Create Your Own Flower Garden: Encourage kids to plant their own mini flower garden. From sunflowers to daisies, nurturing their own blooms provides a firsthand understanding of the life cycle of flowers.
  2. Nature Scavenger Hunt: Organize a nature scavenger hunt for kids to collect various flowers, leaves, and other natural elements. This activity not only connects them with nature but also serves as inspiration for their floral designs.
  3. Floral Crown Crafting: Embrace the whimsy of Floral Design Day by crafting floral crowns. Using colorful flowers and flexible wire, kids can create their own crowns, transforming into floral royalty.
  4. Flower Pressing: Explore the art of flower pressing. Kids can collect small flowers, press them between pages of heavy books, and create unique pressed flower bookmarks or framed art.
  5. DIY Flower Bouquets: Provide an assortment of fresh or silk flowers, along with vases or containers. Kids can unleash their creativity by arranging their own bouquets, learning about color combinations and balance.
  6. Flower Petal Art: Use flower petals as paintbrushes. Dip petals in non-toxic paint and create vibrant artworks. This tactile and imaginative activity allows kids to experiment with different textures and colors.
  7. Floral Design Coloring Pages: Introduce floral design-themed coloring pages. Kids can express their creativity by coloring intricate floral patterns, enhancing their fine motor skills and artistic expression.
  8. Virtual Floral Design Class: Explore virtual floral design classes designed for kids. Many platforms offer online courses where children can learn basic floral arranging techniques from the comfort of their homes.
  9. Flower Language Lesson: Discover the language of flowers. Discuss the meanings associated with different blooms and encourage kids to create their own symbolic bouquets to express feelings or convey messages.
