Chinese Language Day: A Celebration of Culture and Heritage
Chinese is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Chinese Language Day was established by the United Nations in recognition of the contribution of Chinese language and culture to the world community.
We celebrate Chinese Language Day to embrace multilingualism, cultural diversity and to promote equal use of all six official languages.
It falls on April 20th to coincide with the date traditionally observed as the birthday of Cangjie, a mythical figure in ancient China credited with the invention of Chinese characters.
This annual observance serves as an opportunity to promote the importance of multilingualism and cultural diversity and to celebrate the unique contributions of the Chinese language to global communication and understanding. Through language, we bridge barriers, foster connections, and gain insights into the diverse perspectives and experiences that enrich our world.
The Official Languages of the United Nations
Chinese was established as an official language of the United Nations in 1946. In addition to Chinese, the United Nations recognizes five other official languages:
- English (British English)- April 23rd As the primary language of international communication and diplomacy, English plays a central role in global affairs, business, science, and education.
- French – March 20th French is widely spoken in many parts of the world and serves as an official language in numerous international organizations and institutions.
- Spanish April 23rd Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world by native speakers and is an official language in numerous countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
- Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic) -December 18th Arabic is the official language of 22 countries and is widely spoken in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as by communities around the world.
- Russian- June 6 Russian is the most widely spoken Slavic language and serves as an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, among others.
Together, these six languages represent the linguistic diversity and cultural richness of the global community, reflecting the shared values and aspirations of humanity.
Ways Kids Can Celebrate Chinese Language Day:
- Learn Chinese Characters: Introduce kids to the fascinating world of Chinese characters by teaching them basic strokes, radicals, and commonly used characters. Use fun and interactive methods such as flashcards, games, and writing exercises to make learning Chinese characters engaging and enjoyable.
- Explore Chinese Culture: Immerse kids in the vibrant culture and traditions of China through storytelling, music, dance, and art. Read Chinese folktales, listen to traditional Chinese music, learn Chinese calligraphy, or create Chinese-inspired artwork to deepen their appreciation for Chinese culture and heritage.
