Three Kings Day is also known as the Feast of Epiphany or the 12th day of Christmas. The twelve days start with the day after Christmas, also known as Boxing Day or St. Stephen’s Day. They end on January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany, Three Kings Day.
On the Feast of the Epiphany, it is said the Magi, or the wise men arrived to visit the baby Jesus. Therefore we consider the 12th day of Christmas Three Kings Day! The arrival of the 3 wise men confirms that the baby is indeed God on earth.
Three Kings’ Day Around the World:
Families around the world celebrate Three Kings’ Day, also known as Epiphany. This centuries-old tradition holds cultural significance in many countries, and it’s a joyous occasion for both young and old. Let’s explore how this holiday is celebrated globally.
- Spain and Latin America: In Spain and various Latin American countries, elaborate parades feature actors portraying the Three Wise Men, who bring gifts to children. Families often gather for festive meals and enjoy a traditional cake called Roscón de Reyes.
- Mexico: Mexican celebrations include vibrant processions, with families sharing a special meal and exchanging gifts. The traditional sweet bread, Rosca de Reyes, is a staple during these festivities.
- France: In France, the “Galette des Rois” (King’s Cake) is enjoyed, and a small figurine or charm is hidden within the cake. The person who finds it is crowned the king or queen for the day.
