Most people are instantly concerned with WHAT tools they are going to use to homeschool their children. I was more concerned with WHAT the kids were going to call me! Among the many things to consider when looking at the choice to homeschool, this may not keep you awake at night. But here at the Happy Hive, we came up with a clever solution.
The Power of a Teacher Name: Boosting Your Homeschool Journey
We juggle countless hats: caregivers, chefs, taxi drivers, and yes, educators. But embracing the “teacher” role can be just as important for your homeschool’s success. Here’s why a teacher name can be a game-changer.
Creating a Classroom Vibe at Home
Think about it: schools have teachers, not just moms or dads. A teacher name sets the tone for focused learning. It creates a clear distinction between playtime and school time, helping your kids shift gears and get ready to learn.
Here in the Happy Hive, to help establish both my teacher name, and the beginning of the school day I had a clever routine. I would kiss my kids “goodbye” and tell them to have a great day at school. Then I would exit the front door, close it, and count to 10. I’d knock on the door and call out – “Hi Kids! It’s Mrs. Crabtree, It’s time for school.”
At the end of the day Mrs. Crabtree would leave, and Mom returned – asking how the school day went. It was great to hear the kids tell me (Mrs. Crabtree and Mom) all about their day.
Benefits Beyond Titles
Sure, a teacher name adds a touch of formality. But the real magic lies in the impact it has on your homeschool environment:
- Establishing Respect: A teacher name sets boundaries and helps kids see you as an authority figure in the learning space.
- Promoting Structure: It reinforces the importance of routine and dedicated learning time.
- Sharpening Focus: When your kids address you as “Ms. [Name],” it signals it’s time to buckle down and focus.
- Encouraging Independence: A teacher name empowers your children to take charge of their learning journey.
- Building a Love of Learning: It creates a positive learning environment that fosters collaboration and a thirst for knowledge.
Choosing Your “Teacher Name” Together
Now for the exciting part: picking your teacher name! Make it a collaborative effort with your kids:
- Family Meeting Time! Gather your crew and explain the concept of a teacher name. Emphasize how it creates a focused learning environment.
- Brainstorming Bonanza! Get creative! Let your kids throw out ideas for names that sound fun or fitting for a teacher.
- Setting the Criteria: Discuss what qualities you want in a teacher name. Formal? Friendly? Consider factors like pronunciation and length.
- Narrowing it Down: Review the brainstormed names and choose a few favorites. Discuss the pros and cons of each option.
- Let Democracy Decide! Hold a family vote to pick the winner.
- Test Drive Time! Once you have a name, try it out! See how it feels to be addressed as “Ms./Mr./Mx. [Name].” Make adjustments if needed.
- Celebrate Your Choice! Make a big deal out of it! Create a ceremony or craft a special “teacher name” sign.
Remember, It’s a Journey!
Your homeschooling adventure is constantly evolving. If your teacher name doesn’t feel right anymore, revisit it! The most important thing is to create a space where everyone feels comfortable and thrives.
So, have fun with this creative process, and embrace the teacher name that symbolizes your unique homeschooling adventure!
