An Unexpected Symbol of Solidarity; the White T Shirt

On February 11, a simple wardrobe staple takes center stage as we celebrate White T-Shirt Day. This holiday, born out of historical significance, invites us to appreciate the timeless elegance and versatility of the classic white tee. In this blog post, we’ll explore the origins of White T-Shirt Day and share creative ways for kids to celebrate this iconic garment.

The Origin of White T-Shirt Day

White T-Shirt day, also called White Shirt Day, was started by Bert Christenson, a member of United Auto Workers Local 598 on February 11, 1948.

White T-Shirt Day has its roots in labor history and workers’ rights. On February 11, 1937, autoworkers at General Motors in Flint, Michigan staged a peaceful and impactful strike to protest working conditions and demand union recognition. During this strike, workers wore white T-shirts to symbolize solidarity and equality among all workers, regardless of their job roles or status.

Workers at this GM plant decided to hold a sit-in. It lasted 44 days and shut down the plant completely. It impacted General Motors as well as the entire auto industry at the time. Workers were asking to have their concerns heard by those developing their contracts and making the rules.

The simple act of donning a white T-shirt became a powerful statement of unity, and this historical event laid the foundation for recognizing the white tee as a symbol of collective strength and workers’ rights.
