Attended by the legend himself, the first Babe Ruth Day was held on April 27, 1947. They set aside opening day in baseball that year (and April 27th each year after) to unite to in prayer for one of baseball’s most beloved figures.

Earlier that year doctors diagnosed George Herman Ruth with cancer. The surgery to remove it was only partially successful. The large framed baseball star was shrinking before America’s eyes. While hospitalized The Babe received 26,835 letters and telegrams and countless visitors attempted to see him.

Babe Ruth is often called the “home run king”. He was the Ruth was the first player in Major League history to hit 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, and 700 home runs.

In the 1919 season, Ruth hit 29 home runs. This gave him the title of all-time single-season home-run leader. A year later Ruth broke his own record, hitting 54 home runs, and became the first player to hit over 50 home runs in a season. His greatness continued again the following year when he hit 59 home runs, breaking his own record yet again. Finally, in 1927, The Sultan of Swat hit 60 home runs, breaking the mark and establishing a plateau that was in place until Roger Maris in 1961.

Babe Ruth still holds records for the most home runs in any decade (467 in the 1920s), the fastest player to hit 600 home runs (2,044 games), and the fastest player to hit 700 home runs (2,418 games).
