On July 4th, we celebrate Alice in Wonderland Day, a whimsical holiday that invites us to step into the extraordinary world created by Lewis Carroll. This enchanting tale has captivated readers for generations, taking them on a magical journey filled with curious characters, imaginative landscapes, and thought-provoking riddles.

The History of Alice in Wonderland Day

Alice in Wonderland Day is celebrated on July 4th to commemorate the date that Lewis Carroll first told his beloved story to Alice Liddell, the daughter of a friend.

.Alice in Wonderland Day is inspired by the classic novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” written by Lewis Carroll (the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). First published in 1865, this iconic tale follows the adventures of a young girl named Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantastical world filled with peculiar creatures and nonsensical situations.

The story’s imaginative and whimsical elements have made it a beloved work of literature, inspiring countless adaptations, movies, and even a Disneyland attraction.

Activities to Celebrate Alice in Wonderland Day:

Tea Party Madness

Host your very own Mad Hatter’s tea party! Set up a table with colorful teacups, saucers, and a variety of teas (or pretend tea for younger children). Encourage guests to dress up as their favorite characters from the book. Serve delightful treats like finger sandwiches, scones, and whimsical cupcakes. Play games such as musical chairs or create a “pin the smile on the Cheshire Cat” activity.

Wonderland Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt inspired by Alice’s journey through Wonderland. Hide clues or objects that represent iconic moments or characters from the story. For example, a small pocket watch for the White Rabbit or a small key for the tiny door. Let the children follow the clues to unravel the mystery and find the hidden treasure at the end.

Create Your Own Wonderland

Encourage children to unleash their creativity by designing their own Wonderland. Provide art supplies such as paper, markers, colored pencils, and craft materials. Ask them to draw or paint scenes from the book, create unique characters, or even construct a miniature model of Wonderland using cardboard, clay, or recycled materials.

Dress-Up Extravaganza

Invite children to dress up as their favorite characters from Alice in Wonderland. They can become Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, or any other whimsical character that sparks their imagination. Encourage them to put on a small play or act out scenes from the story, fostering their dramatic and storytelling skills.

Curiouser and Curiouser Storytelling

Spark children’s imaginations by engaging in storytelling activities. Provide story prompts or character cards and let them create their own adventures in Wonderland. Encourage them to think beyond the existing story, invent new characters, or imagine what happens after Alice’s adventures. They can write their stories, draw illustrations, or even act them out with friends and family.

On July 4th, let’s embrace our inner curiosity and celebrate Alice in Wonderland Day with a touch of magic, wonder, and a dash of nonsense.
