On June 23rd, we celebrate Typewriter Day, a special occasion to appreciate the iconic machine that revolutionized the way we write. In this blog post, we will delve into the history of typewriters and share engaging ideas for children to learn about and celebrate this timeless invention.

Typewriter Day commemorates the invention of the typewriter, the revolutionary writing machine that paved the way for modern-day keyboards. The typewriter, invented by Christopher Latham Sholes, was granted a patent on June 23, 1868. This device quickly gained popularity and became an essential tool for writers, businesses, and everyday correspondence.

Ideas for Children to Celebrate Typewriter Day

Typewriter Museum

Take children on a virtual tour of a typewriter museum or explore online resources that showcase the evolution of typewriters. Discuss the different types of typewriters throughout history and how they have evolved into modern computer keyboards. We really like this one: THE VIRTUAL TYPEWRITER MUSEUM

Typing Practice

Introduce children to the art of typing on a typewriter. Find an old typewriter or a typewriter simulator online and teach them the basics of typing, including the proper hand placement and finger movements. Practice typing short sentences or their favorite quotes.

Typewriter Art

Our favorite way is with rubber stamps that use a TYPEWRITER FONT. Your kids can write poetry, short letters or create a collage of letters to hang on the fridge.

Typewriter Stories

I remember Santa brought my daughter an antique typewriter after reading the Kit Kitridge series. (American Girl)

Typewriter Appreciation

Discuss with children the impact of typewriters on written communication and the advancements that followed. Compare and contrast the experience of using a typewriter with modern technology. Foster an appreciation for the simplicity and beauty of the typewriter’s mechanical design.

Typewriter Day allows us to pay homage to a remarkable invention that forever changed the way we write. By introducing children to the history of typewriters and engaging them in fun activities like typing practice, typewriter art, and storytelling, we can foster an appreciation for this classic writing machine. Let’s celebrate Typewriter Day on June 23rd and inspire the next generation to embrace the magic of typewriters and the art of writing.
