Submarines date back to 1578 when Cornelius Drebbel, a Dutch inventor created the world’s first working prototype for a submarine. Because none of his plans or drawings survived historians think Drebbel’s submarine was a modified rowboat coated in greased leather and maneuvered by a team of oarsmen.

In 1775, during the American Revolutionary War, an experimental one-man submarine called the “Turtle” was used.  While the Turtle was not able to complete a mission and sink an enemy ship, it was a step in the right direction.

Fast forward to 1800 when the Nautilus, credited with being the first modern submarine, was invented by Robert Fulton. The Nautilus ended up as only scrap metal but paved the way for each improvement in submarines since.

We celebrate National Submarine day in honor of the US Navy’s purchase of the USS Holland on April 11, 1900. This purchase was an important breakthrough for the US Navy in that the Holland IV was equipped with dual propulsion systems, a fixed longitudinal center of gravity, separate main and auxiliary ballast systems, a hydrodynamically advanced shape, and a modern weapon system.
