A Clever Holiday to Teach Fairness, Fractions, and Fables
Lion’s Share Day, observed on July 22, is inspired by the age-old phrase “the lion’s share”, meaning the largest portion of something. While the origin of the phrase dates back to ancient fables, the holiday gives homeschool families a unique opportunity to explore math concepts, character education, literature, and more.
📜 The History Behind the Lion’s Share
The term “lion’s share” is most commonly attributed to Aesop’s fable The Lion’s Share, where a lion and several other animals hunt together and divide the spoils. But when the time comes to split the catch, the lion claims the entire reward—first because he is king, then because of his strength, and finally because he dares anyone to challenge him. The moral? Might makes right… or at least, that’s how the lion sees it.
Over time, the phrase “lion’s share” came to represent the biggest or most desirable portion, often taken (not earned) by those with the most power or influence. That idea—fairness vs. entitlement—is a rich topic for homeschool exploration.
This clever holiday opens up fun and meaningful discussions across language arts, math, ethics, and social studies. Here are ideas to get your learners engaged:
1. Read Aesop’s Fable and Retell It
Read The Lion’s Share (available in most Aesop collections or online) and discuss:
- Who deserved the largest portion?
- Was the lion fair or unfair?
- What lesson can we learn?
Invite your learners to retell the fable from another animal’s point of view—or create a modern version of the story set on a playground or in a classroom.
2. Do a “Lion’s Share” Math Activity
Give your children a snack like crackers or apple slices and tell them to divide it between “four animals.” Then reveal that one animal is a lion… and wants the biggest share!
Ask:
- How would you divide the snack fairly?
- What is the actual lion’s share (largest fraction) of 10 items? Of 12?
- Can we express the shares as fractions or percentages?
This is a great way to explore division, comparing quantities, and visual fraction models.
3. Discuss Fairness and Power
Explore real-life examples of people or groups who take the “lion’s share” of resources, attention, or power. Use age-appropriate examples:
- In a group project, what happens when one person takes over?
- What does it mean to earn something vs. take it?
- Can fairness and leadership coexist?
This opens doors for character development and empathy-building.
4. Write a Modern Fable
Challenge your learners to write a short story or comic strip with a new moral. The characters can be animals, people, or even food items! The goal: teach a lesson about fairness, sharing, or humility.
Lion’s Share Day isn’t just about greedy lions—it’s a chance to help your homeschoolers examine how power, fairness, and reasoning affect our decisions. Whether you dive into math, literature, or thoughtful discussions about justice, July 22 can be a roaring success in your homeschool.
At Happy Hive Homeschooling, we believe that every day is a school day—and with Lion’s Share Day, it’s also a day for clever lessons and creative thinking.
