INTERNATIONAL SCRAPBOOKING INDUSTRY DAY

The First Saturday in May brings women (and a few men) together for National Scrapbooking Day. Today’s holiday, International Scrapbooking Industry Day, celebrates the business side of the hobby. It is the opportunity to take a look at how memory keeping is enhanced by the products the scrapbooking industry has created to help.
A brief history of memory keeping
Families began to keep a record of their history inside the family bible in the mid-1400s. It was common to find full names, dates of birth, marriage, and death. By the mid-1800s bibles included pre-printed pages for such records as standard practice. It was also common for families to include newspaper clippings and other documents between the pages of the bible. These “scraps” were anything with sentimental value to the family.
Eventually, as technology continues to advance photography is invented, and as you can imagine, scrapbooking as we now recognize it evolves over time. The term was first used in 1879 as a verb. Scrapbooking is estimated to be a $2.5 billion industry. It focuses on providing consumers with products that safely preserve their “scraps” as well as their photographs. Much of this diligence is related to the loss caused by magnetic albums used in the 1970s.
You can celebrate international scrapbooking industry Day by:
- Make sure all your photographs have been removed from albums that are not acid free and certified photo safe
- Support your local Scrapbook Retailer by shopping in their store whenever possible – scrapbook supplies are great for all sorts of school projects
- If you don’t scrapbook, perhaps take a class to learn how. This is an activity you can do as a family.
