Embracing Integrity

On April 30th, we honor the virtue of honesty with the observance of Honesty Day. This special occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of truthfulness, integrity, and transparency in our daily lives.

Honesty Day was created in the early 1990s when M. Hirsh Goldberg, the former press secretary of Maryland and writer of many novels, was writing the first draft and researching his book The Book of Lies: Fibs, Tales, Schemes, Scams, Fakes, and Frauds That Have Changed The Course of History and Affect Our Daily Lives. 

We inaugurated the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789. George Washington, known for his honesty, is one reason we celebrate Honesty Day. 

April 30th is also the last day of the month and the opposite of April Fool’s Day. It is a great opportunity to encourage honesty and straightforward communication in politics, relationships, consumer relations, and historical education.

The Meaning of Honesty

By embracing honesty, we uphold our values, honor our commitments, and lead by example for others to follow.

Kids and Honesty

In the minds of kids, it’s not always as simple as truth, or lie. A very real part of a child’s life is make-believe.  Here are some things to help:

• It’s important to consider the nature of a lie. It is for fun or to avoid work or getting in trouble? These are different situations entirely. 

• Discussing the character traits before we need them helps because we can address them with facts and not emotions.  

• Watch Pinocchio

• Help very young children with the difference between truth and lie with this activity: Print a set of 10 pictures like an apple, a car, a puppy. Show the picture and say: This is an orange (show the apple) 

• Discuss how that’s not a true statement. What could happen if someone eats an apple and they are allergic but thought it was an orange? (Yes, unlikely, but it’s role-playing, and for discussion) 

• Show another picture – continue alternating between true and false statements. You can make them really tall tales if you’d like. Give the kids a chance as well. 

With older children, a discussion over some ice cream is a good idea! : 

• What does it mean to be honest?
• How important is honesty?
• Is it immoral to be dishonest?
• Is dishonesty ever acceptable?

Ways Kids Can Celebrate Honesty Day

1. Keep a Truth Journal: Encourage kids to keep a truth journal where they can reflect on their experiences with honesty each day. They can write about times when they were honest, challenges they faced, and how honesty made them feel.
2. Role-Playing Games: Engage children in role-playing games that emphasize the importance of honesty in different scenarios. They can take turns acting out situations where honesty is tested, such as returning a found item or admitting to a mistake.
3. Story Time: Read children’s books or stories that highlight the theme of honesty and its positive outcomes. Discuss the characters’ actions and the consequences of their choices, encouraging kids to reflect on the value of honesty in their own lives.
4. Create an Honesty Pledge: Have kids create their own honesty pledge or oath, declaring their commitment to truthfulness and integrity. They can decorate their pledges with artwork or symbols that represent honesty and display them as a reminder of their values.
5. Random Acts of Honesty: Encourage kids to perform random acts of honesty throughout the day, such as returning a borrowed item, admitting to a mistake, or speaking up for what is right. Celebrate their acts of integrity and encourage them to continue practicing honesty in their interactions with others.

Honesty Day is a time to celebrate the timeless virtue of honesty and its profound impact on our lives and communities. By instilling the value of honesty in children from a young age, we empower them to navigate the complexities of the world with integrity, compassion, and authenticity. Let’s celebrate Honesty Day with reflection, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to living truthfully and authentically each day.
