The History of Fire Prevention Day
Honoring the Great Chicago Fire
Fire Prevention Day has its roots in the tragic events of October 8-10, 1871, when the Great Chicago Fire blazed through the city, leaving widespread destruction and loss of life. While the exact cause of the fire remains uncertain, it serves as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences of fire and the importance of fire safety.
In 1920, Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire and promote fire safety education. This week-long observance begins on the Sunday of Fire Prevention Week and includes October 9th as Fire Prevention Day.
Essential Fire Safety Tips
- Install Smoke Alarms: Ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test them regularly and replace batteries at least once a year.
- Create Escape Plans: Develop and practice fire escape plans with your family. Designate a meeting place outside your home. Teach children to crawl low under smoke.
- Check Heating Sources: Keep flammable materials away from heaters and furnaces. Have your heating systems professionally inspected and maintained regularly.
- Fire Extinguishers: Place fire extinguishers in key areas of your home, such as the kitchen and garage. Teach family members how to use them safely.
- Kitchen Safety: Never leave cooking unattended, and keep flammable items away from the stove. Teach kids about the dangers of hot surfaces and open flames.
Activities Kids can do for Fire Prevention Day
- Stop, Drop, and Roll: Teach children the “stop, drop, and roll” technique in case their clothing catches fire. This simple action can save lives.
- Fire Safety Art: Encourage kids to create fire safety-themed artwork. They can draw firefighters, fire trucks, and safe practices like checking smoke alarms.
