But at the heart of it all is something simple and human: curiosity.\n\n\n\nTourist Appreciation Day, celebrated each year on May 6, shines a light on the travelers who explore new places and the communities who welcome them.\n\n\n\nSo what exactly is a tourist?\n\n\n\nA tourist is someone who travels away from their normal environment for more than 24 hours and less than one year, whether for business, family events, or pleasure. If your family has ever taken a vacation, attended a wedding out of town, or visited relatives overnight, you were tourists. And when visitors come to your city to see landmarks, beaches, museums, or theme parks, they are tourists in your hometown.\n\n\n\nTourism connects cultures, supports local businesses, and introduces people to new foods, traditions, and perspectives. It is geography, economics, history, language arts, and social studies all wrapped into one lived experience.\n\n\n\nThis spark is a beautiful opportunity to explore the world, even if you never leave home.\n\n\n\nWays to Explore Tourist Appreciation Day\n\n\n\nLet your child’s curiosity lead the direction. Do they love maps? Food? Photography? Animals? Architecture? There is a travel angle for all of it.\n\n\n\n🌎 Plan a Dream TripResearch a destination your child chooses.\n\n\n\n\nMap the route\n\n\n\nCreate a simple travel budget\n\n\n\nExplore landmarks, parks, or cultural sites\n\n\n\nLearn a few words in the local languageHave them present their travel plan to the family, Shark Tank style or travel agent style.\n\n\n\n\n📸 Revisit a Past AdventurePull out old photos and create a travel journal or scrapbook page.\n\n\n\n\nAdd captions\n\n\n\nWrite a memory from each location\n\n\n\nResearch one new fact about a place you visitedThis is memory keeping and research skills blended together.\n\n\n\n\n🏙 Be a Tourist in Your Own TownEven if you do not meet the official 24 hour rule, you can still “tour” locally.\n\n\n\n\nVisit a museum, nature preserve, historical site, or downtown area\n\n\n\nCreate a travel brochure promoting your city\n\n\n\nInterview a local shop owner about how tourism impacts their business\n\n\n\n\n💰 Follow the MoneyOlder kids can explore the economics of tourism.\n\n\n\n\nHow do hotels, restaurants, and attractions benefit?\n\n\n\nWhat are the downsides of heavy tourism?\n\n\n\nHow do cities prepare for major events?\n\n\n\n\n🍽 Taste the WorldChoose a country and cook a simple dish from that region.Talk about why food is often a tourist’s favorite memory.\n\n\n\n🗺 Map It OutTrack places your family has visited on a large map.Let your child choose the next pin.\n\n\n\nThe beauty of this day is that it invites imagination.
